William & Mary has received a $3 million gift from the estate of Margaret Baxter Vaughan ’76. Two and a half million dollars of the bequest are unrestricted funds, while $500,000 has been given to Swem Library.

Non-human animals did not leave diaries or letters behind for historians to piece together life from the animals' perspectives. Therefore, researchers have to rely on materials produced by humans to access the historical lives of animals.
