Facebook API

I've been kind of silent here as I've been trying to keep this blog at least somewhat focused on ColdFusion and I've been doing development in some different languages as of late (Java, PHP, and Ruby). However, when Facebook released their API for developers, my summer assistant Phil started hacking away at it and we've released our first app for Facebook: SwemTools.

It does a couple of things, provides a search interface for both the online catalog and our website, news feeds, hours, and a bit of a neat application based on Swem Signal that was created by Tom MacWright.

We're still working on the code for the Signals part, but the idea is that on a map of the library, you'd be able to see where your friends are. Right now, you can see a dot where your friends are, but not who they are...but we're working on a solution for it.

Anyway, if you're on Facebook, check it out...you can add me as a friend too.

Vertalen via Vertaal Woordenboek's Gravatar Wayne,

Any plans for making it available for a Dutch version of Facebook (*www.hyves.nl)?

As facebook isn`t really popular in EU this could be very nice, or perhaps for myspace....

Wayne Graham's Gravatar Hmmm...well probably not this exact application. It's very specific to this library (it only has maps of our library, connect to our library catalog, and show the hours for our library). Technically it wouldn't be that difficult to add i18n coding, but we don't have very many our our students in the Netherlands (maybe a few a year studying abroad, or on their way through to other destinations).

This isn't to say that it can't be done, and we may start looking at other social sites like MySpace, but from what I understand of our student body, most of them use Facebook and this is really an attempt to reach out to students where they live their digital lives.

If you're interested in adapting some code, let me know and I'll start vetting the code through the proper channels so we can release it.

Richie's Gravatar You saying that facebook.com hasn't really taken off here in Europe - I have the complete opposite opinion of facebook.com. It seems to be huge in the UK and there is forever news reports on the impact it is having on the net.
