Driving directions to the parking area may be obtained from a number of online sources includes Google Maps:

General Directions

From the South/East: From I-64, take Exit 242A, Route 199 West (towards Williamsburg, Jamestown).

Travel approximately 5.1 miles on Route 199 to the fourth traffic light (Jamestown Road, also known as Route 5 East). Turn right onto Jamestown Road.

From the North/West: From I-64, take Exit 234, Route 199 East (Lightfoot).

Travel approximately 8 miles on Route 199 to the second traffic light (Jamestown Road, also known as Route 5 East). Turn left onto Jamestown Road.

Then, On Jamestown Road: go past the traffic light in front of Walsingham Academy on the right and past the small lake on the left.

The road marking narrows to one traffic lane and the road then begins to run slightly uphill.

Turn left at the first street after coming up the small incline. The street (Ukrop Way -- formerly Campus Drive) is at the painted crosswalk across Jamestown Road. This puts you on the William and Mary campus.

Travel approximately 0.3 miles to the stop sign. Stop, then travel straight. Swem Library is the first building on the right.

Parking

Weekdays and Weeknights:   Monday 7:30 a.m. through Friday 5:00 p.m. (includes all weeknights except Fridays)

• Parking meter or parking permit required.

• Parking meters:

• two metered spaces on the street directly behind the library
  25-cents for 30 minutes; 30-minute maximum
• six metered spaces are located in front of the Muscarelle Museum of Art (a 1/3-mile walk to the front door)
  25-cents for 30 minutes; 60-minute maximum

• Visitor parking permits may be purchased from:

• W&M Parking Services, 201 Ukrop Way (same building as Campus Police, on Ukrop Way and in front of the campus parking garage).  Hours: 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• W&M Campus Police Department, same address as W&M Parking Services.  Hours: after 4:30 p.m. weekdays plus weekends.
• Swem Library's Circulation Desk.  Hours: during any library hours except past midnight.
• As of July 1, 2007, parking permits cost $3.00 per day. Parking Services also sells a one-week pass for $15.00. Note: Swem Library's Circulation Desk accepts only cash, check, or W&M Express Card for payment.

• Visitors with parking permits may park in Faculty/Staff parking spaces that are marked "Faculty and Staff Parking Only" [but not in spaces marked "Reserved for Faculty and Staff at All Times"].

Weekends:   Fridays after 5:00 p.m. and all-day Saturdays and Sundays

• Visitors may park for free in any Faculty/Staff or Student parking spaces (except those marked "Reserved for Faculty and Staff at All Times").  Faculty/Staff parking spaces that are within walking distance to Swem Library include:

• Behind the library's northwest side: these are street and lot parking spaces. Access to the library includes an inclined walkway and about 5 steps; distance to the front door is about 1/3-mile.
• Along Landrum Drive: these are street parking spaces, very limited in number. Access to the library includes about 30 steps; distance to the front door is from two blocks to 1/4-mile.
• In front of Phi Beta Kappa Hall: these are lot parking spaces. Access to the library is a level walk; distance to the front door is about 1/3-mile.

 

Handicapped Parking Spaces

A few handicapped parking spaces are available in front of Phi Beta Kappa Hall (off of Jamestown Road), behind Small Hall (the building on the right that you reach just before Swem Library, when following the driving directions above), and behind the library.

• Behind Swem Library:  5 spaces in the small parking lot immediately behind the library. Access to the library's front door is via a sloping walkway and a distance of about 1/3 mile.  For patrons who cannot travel distances, staff assistance is available to enter the building through special access doors. Visitors who wish to use this assistance are asked to call the library's Circulation Department at 757-221-3072 a day or two in advance of their visit to schedule this assistance. Swem Library also has a manual wheelchair with which staff can meet visitors to assist them in entering the building.
• In front of Phi Beta Kappa Hall:  Several handicapped spaces. Access to the library is a level walk; distance to the front door is about 1/3-mile.
• Small Hall spaces: A couple of spaces in a small parking area immediately behind Small Hall. Access to the library is via an inclined walkway and about 5 steps; distance to the front door is about 1/3-mile.
