Reference/Instruction Librarian
The Reference /Instruction Librarian will work in the Swem Library Reference Department and will report to the Head of Reference Services. As a member of the Reference Department, the incumbent will participate in the full program of the Research, Instruction and Outreach Services Division, including the delivery of reference services and instruction.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides general reference services during assigned reference desk hours, including weekends and evenings; participates in virtual reference services, and supports all new reference service initiatives as they develop.
Serves as a liaison to one or more academic departments. Duties include departmental collection development and evaluation activities, communication of new library resources and services, and one-on-one research appointments with students and faculty; develops resource guides and other information-rich web content to support teaching and learning.
Presents general and subject-specific classroom-based instructional sessions. Shares fully in the library’s literacy initiatives.
Initiates and sustains programs to support student use of the library and library resources.
Participates in planning, policy formation, and departmental decision making related to reference services, collections, and new technologies.
Serves on library and university committees and task forces as appropriate.
Stays informed of current issues in the professional library and academic communities; participates in professional development opportunities at the local, regional, and national levels.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
- Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
-Knowledge of print and electronic reference sources and services.
- Experience with website design. Evidence of innovative uses of current and emerging technologies in support of reference initiatives.
-Strong public services approach and outlook.
-Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and organizational skills, including the ability to provide effective instruction in the classroom and with individual students and others.
-Ability to build and maintain positive collaborative relationships with library and college faculty and staff.
-Tolerance for ambiguity and the capacity to respond to organizational change.
-Ability to work a flexible schedule.
PREFERRED
-Advanced degree in a subject discipline.
-Previous academic library experience, preferably in public services.
-Familiarity with assessment techniques.
-Knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
This is a 10 month position - August through May.

REFERENCE LIBRARIAN (Hourly Position)
The Part Time Reference Librarian will work for the Reference Department at Swem Library. The schedule is to be determined but will include working at the Reference Desk some evenings and some weekend hours. The position reports to the Head of Reference Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides general reference services during assigned reference desk hours, including weekends and evenings; participates in virtual reference services (e-mail, instant messaging, and chat) and supports all new reference service initiatives as they develop.
2. Maintains ongoing awareness and familiarity with library resources and databases to explain and instruct patrons in all resources.
3. Stays informed of campus computing and digital initiatives.
4. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
1. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
2. Strong public services approach and outlook; familiarity with user evaluation techniques.
3. Effective interpersonal, communication, presentation and organizational skills, including the ability to provide instruction in a diverse computer help desk environment; ability to provide assistance to staff with computer-related problems and explain solutions and techniques to them in a clear manner; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
4. Good working knowledge of PC hardware, Windows-based applications, and the uses and configuration of public workstations in libraries.
5. Flexibility in work schedule.
PREFERRED
1. Academic background or advanced degree in a humanities or social sciences discipline.
2. Previous academic research library experience, preferably in public service.
SCHEDULE
Work schedule will include desk coverage some evenings and weekend hours. This position provides coverage during the academic year – 32 weeks.

Staff and Hourly Positions
LIBRARY SPECIALIST II, Cataloging/Ill Borrowing Assistant
This position will maintain currency and correctness of the library's online catalog in order to provide access for library patrons to materials in the library's collections, catalog the collection of new monographic materials for which bibliographic records are available from national and other OCLC member libraries, and ensure the catalog accurately represents materials in Swem and its branch libraries. Other duties include facilitating the timely interlibrary loan of materials not held in William and Mary Libraries but needed by William and Mary patrons, ensuring that services are provided in compliance with all loan codes and guidelines.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma plus two years additional education in the liberal arts or equivalent work experience; familiarity with library catalogs, national bibliographic databases, interlibrary loan procedures, practices and principles; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience working with the public.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from a liberal arts college or equivalent education; work experience in a library or academic setting; supervisory experience.
Criminal history background check required.
Salary: $31,352

CIRCULATION ASSISTANT
This is a 10-month position. As a member of the Circulation Department, this position ensures that patrons receive excellent overall circulation and reserves services.
Qualifications:
Minimum high school degree or equivalent, and have the ability to process fines and fees, including accurately using a cash register. Knowledge of circulation and reserves policies and procedures and of automated circulation systems, word processing, database, and spreadsheet computer software. Ability to interact positively with faculty, staff, students, other patrons, outside vendors and authorities, to communicate clearly and with diplomacy, both verbally and in writing; maintain confidentiality of patron records and security of library systems, ability to work independently, to identify problems and solutions, to initiate and implement solutions, to use good judgment and make sound decisions. The successful candidate must have the
ability to lift at least 25 pounds, push a cart full of books or hand truck with boxes, reach, stoop, and climb a ladder to retrieve and to shelve library materials, work in a fast-paced, multiple-stimuli environment. Satisfactory criminal history background check required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Four-year college degree or a combination of education and experience that indicates possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities.
Direct experience helping the public, experience with computer office software and with office procedures (filing, organizing), experience with online library circulation systems.
Schedule:
This is a 10 month, hourly position.
Salary: $11.54/hour
