Dean of University Libraries

The College of William and Mary seeks a dynamic leader to serve as Dean of University Libraries.  The ideal candidate will bring the vision, creativity, energy and experience to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and external constituencies, including donors, in the ongoing transformation of providing information, resources and services.  The Dean plays a university wide role in the development and implementation of emerging technologies to support teaching, learning, and research. The second oldest university in the United States, the College of William and Mary, a public university, is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate, graduate and professional education and research. The undergraduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business and education enroll approximately 5,800 students.  Another 2,000 are enrolled in the graduate and professional programs in arts and sciences, business, education, law and marine science.  Masters degrees are awarded in 25 disciplines and the College has doctoral degree programs in 10 areas. 

Earl Gregg Swem Library was ranked by Princeton Review as the seventh-best college library in the nation, and the library just completed its best fund raising year to date with a record $5.2M.  A dynamic staff of 65 offers services in a vibrant environment that has had a major addition and renovation in the last five years.  The library’s annual base budget is over $7M, with private gifts and endowment funding of an additional nearly $1.5M.  Further information about the College and Swem is available at www.wm.edu  and http://swem.wm.edu.

Circulation User Services Supervisor

This position is open only to current College of William and Mary or Virginia Institute of Marine Science employees. The College of William and Mary seeks applicants for the position of Library Specialist I to ensure that patrons receive excellent overall circulation and reserves services; oversee overdues and fines, ensuring that materials are promptly and accurately returned and checked in and that patrons' accounts are accurate and current. 

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must be current College of William and Mary or Virginia Institute of Marine Science employees. High School Graduate or GED. Knowledge of Circulation and Reserves policies, procedures and automated circulation systems and using Microsoft Office products (word processing, database, and spreadsheet computer software including skills to create accuracte documents, databases, and spreadsheets for assignments and special projects). The successful candidate must have the ability to interact positively with faculty, staff, students, and other patrons to include outside vendors and authorities, communicate clearly, both verbally and written, with diplomacy, maintain confidentiality of patron records and security of library systems. Additionally, the successful candidate must have the ability to supervise student assistants, using positive and fair practices, including hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating, work independently, to identify problems and solutions, to initiate and implement solutions, using good judgment and making sound decisions, plan, organize, manage, implement and evaluate large projects and long range goals, lift at least 25 pounds; push a cart full of books or hand truck with boxes, shelve and retrieve library materials (climbing ladder), drive a van, process fines using a cash register, balancing the cash drawer, making daily deposits, and updating patrons' accounts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of supervisory experience in an organization providing service to the public; direct experience helping the public and handling cash; experience planning and implementing projects; experience with online library circulation systems. 
Four year college degree or a combination of education and experience. 

Salary Range:  $22,955-25,000
