There are a total of 17 assigned studies located on the second and third floors of Swem Library. Each study has a desk with two shelves and a chair.
Anyone wishing to be assigned a study must apply to Swem Administration by the end of the first full week of classes each semester.
Study Assignment
Studies will be assigned the second week of classes by a committee consisting of two library staff members, a faculty member, and a graduate student.
Keys will be picked up from the Circulation Desk and must be returned the day after the last day of exams. Persons occupying a study for one semester must reapply for the next semester.
- Use of an assigned study is restricted to faculty, students, staff of the College of William and Mary, and visiting researchers.
- Study assignments will be made by Swem Administration in consultation with the provost's office, as needed.
- Preference will be given to 1) persons with special needs; 2) students and faculty involved in major research projects using Swem collections; 3) students and faculty involved in a major research project for which Swem space is desirable; and 4) special circumstances.
- More than one person may be assigned to a study.
- Library policies apply to the assigned studies as they do for the rest of the building.
- The library is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage of personal property. Lockers are provided on each floor.
- Furniture should not be moved in or out of the study without written permission of the Swem Administration.
- Only library materials checked out through Circulation or Interlibrary Loan may be kept in the study. Non-circulating materials such as journals, microfilm, and reference materials may not be kept in the study.
- Failure to return a study key will result in a $10.00 fine; lock replacement will result in a $35.00 fine.
- Privileges to use an assigned study can be revoked by the Dean of University Libraries, with consultation with the Provost or the VP for Student Affairs, as needed.
