About Information Technology

Information Technology is responsible for providing, promoting and servicing a modern technology infrastructure for The College of William and Mary. Swem Library and Information Technology work closely together to provide library resources utilizing the latest technology. An IT liaison is assigned to many academic departments and programs. The following table outlines the difference between what your IT liaison and your library liaison can do for you.


Swem Library: Information Technology:
Information Content: Concentrate on information content and access to resources in all formats (electronic, paper, microform, video, etc.). Technology: Concentrate on using and integrating technology into the classroom.
Library Services: Faculty contact for all library-related services or questions. IT Services: Faculty contact for all Information Technology-related services or questions.
Information: Research information expert for academic departments. Technical: Technical expert for academic departments.
Databases and Resources: Support for evaluating, identifying, and helping to use appropriate databases and printed information resources. Software and Hardware: Support for evaluating, identifying, and helping implement appropriate software and hardware products for academic department.
Content and Use Training: Training in Web searching, evaluating Web resources, using print and electronic research tools, searching LION, offering tours and orientations to the library -- to individual classes, to groups of classes or students, to academic departments, as requested. Software and Hardware Training: Working with IT Training Team, identifies training needs and provides training opportunities for departments.
Order Materials: Assist department in identifying and ordering materials in all formats. Software, Hardware, Network Responsibilities: Install, troubleshoot, and maintain PCs, software, networks.
Electronic Reserves: Support electronic reserves by digitizing materials, especially for posting on Blackboard course software. Blackboard: Support Blackboard, an easy-to-use software tool for building course Web sites. Blackboard can be used independently; it can also be integrated with electronic reserves.
Access to Campus Resources: IT now provides access to the College's proxy server, enabling the academic community to access licensed resources and campus services from off-campus.
