The IT departmental liaisons have reviewed a number of methods that departments can use to create digital copies of reserved materials to be included on Blackboard or to be provided to students for use in class. Most departments will be able to meet their scanning needs through some combination of the following methods.
- IKON scanning using departmental copiers. (Notes: There are no per-page charges for scanning. Many of the current copiers would require upgrading to the printer/scanner option at an additional cost of Individuals doing the scanning should monitor the size of the PDF's created to be sure they are under the 50MB mail quota. Training and support are provided by IKON.)
- Scanning at the Faculty Digital center (FDC) in Washington Hall. The FDC offers Image manipulation services.
You can:
- Make high resolution scans of old slides, photos, pictures from books, etc.
- Create a digital archive of an aging slide collection and post the images to a searchable database
- Digitize book images for easier and more dramatic use in class
- Detailed instructions are available at the digital center on how to produce PDF documents. If departments are planning to purchase scanners for departmental use, we recommend purchasing Epson models similar to those in the FDC. Step –by-step “cookbooks” will be developed by IT staff to help departments produce the smallest possible file sizes to minimize problems when loading into Blackboard and when printing. Scanned documents can be saved to departmental group shared space. Departments should contact their IT liaisons or TSC staff to review specifications before purchasing a scanner. Training and support are provided by IT liaisons and Technology Support Center .
- IKON scanning at Swem: Faculty can use any of the copiers/scanners in the library. It will attach the pages as a PDF and send it to their email. If you have any questions on how to use the scanning feature, someone in the Copy Center can show you. Faculty can only scan to a W&M email address. The only issue you need to be aware of is the W&M mail server file size limit (50 MB). Sometimes the file won't send if it exceeds the file size limit. You might need to send multiple files if it is a really big job.
