Swem to expand film collection

Swem Library is adding a number of critically-acclaimed movies to its film collection. The library will now automatically acquire nominated films from a selection of the industry’s most prestigious awards and festivals, including the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. In addition, the library has received the entire Criterion Collection, which includes hundreds of highly-regarded films, both recent and classic.

Each year Swem will receive the nominated films of the Academy Awards, Golden Globes,  British Academy Film Awards, Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and South by Southwest Arts Festival. The acquisitions will go beyond the films that receive the most attention by including all nominees, not just the winners, from even some of the more obscure or technical categories. This year’s acquisitions have included, not only big winners like “12 Years a Slave” and “Gravity,” but also the less well-known “Before Midnight” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

The purchase of the Criterion Collection adds over 950 new titles to the library’s collection. The Criterion is dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions of the highest technical quality. It includes works from every time period and movement in film, from great directors such as Frederico Fellini, François Truffaut, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa and Alfred Hitchcock. Whatever your tastes, the Criterion Collection will allow you to explore the history of film and discover new personal favorites.

By offering a broad array of high-quality films, these two plans will expand and add new depth to Swem’s already extensive collection, located on the first floor by the Circulation Desk. Come pick up a critically-acclaimed film today!
